Boston Bruins win NHL pre-season opener

The Boston Bruins shutout the New Jersey Devils 2-0 in their NHL pre-season opener thanks to Matt Irwin's double.

Irwin - recruited from the San Jose Sharks for the 2015-16 campaign - broke the deadlock in the second period at Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, Rhode Island on Sunday.

The Canadian defenseman, who tallied eight goals in 53 games last season, doubled Boston's lead in the third period as New Jersey's rookie coach John Hynes tasted defeat on debut.

Boston trialist Jonas Gustavsson made 18 saves, while team-mate Jeremy Smith blocked 12 shots of his own in the second period for the Bruins, who missed the play-offs in 2014-15 for the first time in seven seasons.

The Florida Panthers and Nashville Predators, meanwhile, split their double-header.

Filip Forsberg's double helped the Predators to a 5-2 victory in game one at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, but the Panthers hit back later in the day with a 3-2 overtime win.
