Postponed Matches on Betslips

The last-minute postponement of a key match day can catch even the most diligent punters flat-footed. But even sharp bettors who meticulously scan the pitching weather and injury tables can miss a delay, especially if it is called after markets close. Does that automatically void your carefully laid accumulator? The answer is no, says Sky Bet and most other major operators: instead, the operator uses its own postponement window - which typically ranges from 24 hours to 48 hours - to decide if the affected bets stand or become void.
At betting operators including Fanatics, William Hill and Sportsbook FanDuel, wagers on a football match that is postponed but then rescheduled within the respective operator's time window (48 hours or the same day) will stand - while all bets on the match are voided if the game is resumed to replace its original slot in the round, or if it begins more than the operator's window after the original kick-off.
"For instance, if Manchester United's game at Middlesbrough on December 1 is postponed until December 5, that's within the 4-day window at Betfair, so your single bets and accumulators will remain live, so long as the time is confirmed in 3 hours of the original 15:00 kick-off", says Betfair's support page. This is why operator-specific rules matter. Different operators additionally have different exceptions. Especially in the land of multiple, where a voided selection does not necessarily void the whole bet.
Abandoned matches and settled wagers
Once a football match starts, then stops, the operator's settlement rules for abandoned matches come into play. Shortened, irregular, and restricted matches can make it hard to position the bet well, but according to Betfair, Sky Bet, and Fanatics, the primary question – which operators state in different ways – is whether any settled positions have already been decided.
"If a match is abandoned after the outcome has already been determined, that part of the bet will still stand, while the other will be void", say these operators. Part of the trick for abandoned bets, which for multiple bets may include "suspensions, interruptions, or the loss of data", according to Sky Bet, is to find out what kind of abandonment you are talking about. If you bet on abandoned matches, your outcome is void, and so is your stake.
What actually happens to accumulators
Once your specific match becomes voided, your multiple is settled on the remaining legs. Predictably, it's harder to find the "re-pricing" specific recalculations of winnings and compilations of odds (as operators elect not to disclose these) That's why your booker's rules are so important. Each operator has its own process for refunding, and telling where you can make the settlement process work for you - or knowing where not to place heavy accumulators.
The time window rules
The player's first line of defence, and what makes the absolute differences on settlement, is the operator's chosen time window for a postponed match. Each UK bookmaker's technical documentation recommends a different time schedule. Betfair and William Hill use 48-hour windows. Sky Bet uses 36 hours, Fanduel 48. Betfair allows up to 72 hours – confirming the time via phone or web chat if online checks fail – and even more after that if you ask nicely.
But the rule with the tightest window is the one you really need to worry about – Fanatics Sportsbook describes its house rule, simply, as "the same scheduled day."
The player's checklist
This all adds up to a handful of checklists for players considering football accumulators. The first is to take a second look at what your operator considers "postponed:" there's an important distinction between this and an abandoned match, and operators set these rules.
Then you have already-settled bets: check whether you can bet on over/under, either team to score, primary 1x2, red or yellow cards, or over/under corners even if the match is abandoned. This means checking the sportsbook house rules.
