Virtual Football Betting Explained

Virtual football betting is a form of sports betting that does not involve real-world football teams or matches. Instead, the outcomes of virtual football bets are determined by computer-generated simulations. The constant availability of virtual football matches, which arrive every few minutes, incentivises rapid betting that can increase risk.

SportyBet Ghana describes on its help page how its virtual football game lets users place real-money bets on the result of virtual football matches in a virtual football league. All match simulations are created through a combination of independent Random Number Generators (RNGs) and algorithms, not by any real-game inputs. Betting is allowed up to 10 seconds before a virtual kick-off to preserve the sense of live influence.

When a result is computed, the RNG picks a number at random, and then uses that number to construct a visualization of that result.

Markets on Virtual Football

Operators try to give this casino-style simulation a familiar feel. The markets available on virtual football are similar to those for real football. As named by a talkSPORT BET article, the two main markets are:

  • Match result (1X2): bet on the home win, draw or away win at the end of the 90 minutes.
  • Over/under goals: bet on the total number of goals scored by both teams.
  • Correct score: bet on the exact number of goals scored by both teams at the end of the 90 minutes.

The goal totals and other number-based markets hint at a simulation generating more fixed numbers for bettors.

Speed and Risk

The fast pace of virtual betting is a major distinctive from real-world football. On one hand, it means bettors are never waiting to play. On the other, the frequency means their expenses can pile up, especially when sessions are long.

"The beauty of virtual sports is that you have matches running around the clock, every hour of every day. Each hour, you will have a match to play and bet on," explains a betrank Ghana article. A "new match arrives roughly every 2-3 minutes, meaning you won't have to wait long for the next game."

But the constant cadence also means bettors are constantly having to make decisions, the article notes. Many may bet on a string, or chase a "lucky" streak. This frequency feeds the same "one more try" mindset as slot machines. For that reason, the smaller time scale may not match many people's natural pace. The virtual interface may have the feel of your club's next match, but the result arrives instantaneously.

Virtual Football in Ghana

In Ghana, the betting volume may be increasing. A number of providers, including SportyBet and Betika, all offer virtual betting. The providers have the largest Ghana-facing screens and advertise virtual football generally, meaning there are many visible offers. But this does not mean that Ghana is exceptional in providing virtual betting or training.

No prominent information on safer gambling controls for virtual betting specifically were found. Most articles encourage caution in adopting virtual gambling, but do not refer to controls at the provider or regulator level. There may be a need for the Ghana Gaming Commission to develop rules for rapidly-updated virtual sports to avoid faster spending than with real-life sports betting.
