New Mobile Money Transfer Cap Disrupts In-Play Football Betting, Ghanaian Sportsbooks Warn

03 November 2026

Changes to mobile money transfer fees and wallet limits in Ghana have sports betting operators warning about impacts on in-play football markets. With cashier and cash-out rules changing, sportsbooks advise bettors to check their betting accounts and mobile wallets to avoid disruptions during football matches. The English Premier League, African competitions, and Ghanaian football fixtures are most affected, according to industry experts.

Even before a proposed new mobile money fee, in-play betting on football matches is already impacted by recent regulations from the Bank of Ghana. Operators have implemented in-play restrictions as new rules regarding account verification take effect. From March 1, 2024, mobile wallets have maximum balances and daily limits tied to user verification levels. Initially proposed for May, an additional 0.75% charge on wallet-to-bank transfers was postponed by the Bank of Ghana.

"For in-play football markets to function smoothly, we need fast deposits, quick withdrawals, and secure betting account management," explains a Ghanaian betting analyst. "But when users reach mobile money limits, or when fee fluctuations delay withdrawals, those instant bets get stuck at the cashier stage."

Transfer Fees Vary by Provider

"Withdrawals can be sent to different wallets, but transferring money between mobile money accounts incurs charges that vary by amount." Industry reports indicate: "MTN has the most detailed fee structure, while Vodafone and Airtel use simpler flat fee systems."

Even for professional traders specializing in in-play football markets, navigating multiple fee thresholds presents challenges. Ghanaian financial analysts noted in 2025: "The charges cover mobile platform providers, network operators, Bank of Ghana fees, plus the E-Levy. While unpopular, these combined costs mean the 0.75% fee remains in place for now."

While specific figures change, withdrawal limits typically appear in various forms across operators. Major sportsbooks generally cap withdrawals between GHS 30,000-50,000 daily. "Limits may apply as daily maximums, monthly allowances, or fixed amounts per transaction," according to industry standards.

As of 2025, most Ghanaian football bettors still prefer MTN Mobile Money for account access, with some platforms calling it the "default option" for mobile transactions. However, financial experts note that wallet limits can create bottlenecks for high-volume bettors in fast-moving markets.

These challenges particularly affect Ghanaian football betting, but English Premier League and Africa Cup of Nations markets face greater pressure. Industry analysts warn that regulatory changes are now impacting even routine betting operations.

"This hits casual bettors and professional traders hardest," commented a financial analyst. "The issue isn't any single fee, but how multiple charges from different providers accumulate, forcing users to closely monitor balances before placing bets. These timing pressures particularly affect high-frequency trading strategies."
